Lesson I.3 Clefs

I.3.A

Review

Notation is used to show a range of notes. The range is determined by the voice or instrument.

Music uses a system of 5 lines and 4 spaces called a staff. The staff has no meaning without a clef.

Clefs are used to give meaning to the lines and spaces and tell use which range we are notating.

I.3.Ba

Treble or G Clef

Orientation Note:

G below A=440, above A=220

Music pitch names are based on a repeating alphabet pattern: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A

If you move up, you are moving forward; A ascends to B.

If you move down, you are moving backward; A descends to G.

I.3.Bb

Alto or C clef

Orientation Note:

C above A=220

I.3.Bc

Bass or F Clef

Orientation Note:

F above A=110
